Stereotypemess: Dia de Muertos with Veuve Clicquot

"Día de muertos" is a day to celebrate and remember our loved ones that have gone before us. The "day of the dead" is a long standing mexican celebration that began with the ancient Aztecs. Keeping true to this tradition a lot of mexican families make special altars and beautiful preparations with offerings like candy, food and meaningful things that were special to their loved ones. Of course, this includes the world famous "pan de muerto"/

Día de muertos es un día para celebrar a nuestros antepasados y a personas importantes de nuestra vida que se fueron antes que nosotros. El Día de muertos es una celebración mexicana que iniciaron los aztecas hace muchísimos años. Y siguiendo la tradición muchísimas gente lo sigue celebrando hasta el día de hoy preparando altares y ofrendas con comida típica como el famoso pan de muerto y objetos que fueron significativos para nuestros seres queridos.

Personally, I always like to celebrate this special occasion with friends and family. When I am in Mexico, I like to visit the altars that are made every year to celebrate this special date. It is incredible how people decorate the altars with beautiful things such as bright cut-out tissue paper, skeleton figurines, sugar and chocolate skulls and arranged marigolds (Cempazuchitl in Nahuatl). It is also very common to see lots of candles and incense. The candles represent the soul while the incense symbolize the soul ascension to heaven./

Personalmente siempre me gusta celebrar esta fecha con mi familia y amigos. Cuando estoy en México, me encanta ir a ver los altares y las ofrendas que hacen cada año. Me parece verdaderamente increíble como decoran las ofrendas con cosas como el papel picado, las calácas de azúcar y de chocolate y arreglos de flores de Cempazuchitl. También es muy común ver muchas velas e incienso. Las velas representan las almas de los que ya se han ido y el incienso simboliza el asenso de las almas al cielo.

This year, me and my friends spent an afternoon at my friend Jordane's wineshop to celebrate, remember and prepare a special meal in honor of those who have departed. We enjoyed a meal which included pan de muerto and calacas de azucar (bread of the dead and sugar skulls) and with a glass of Veuve Clicquot champagne we toast the dead. My great-grandmother, who passed three years ago, always said that we should accept death within our lives and react to it with happiness and joy. Therefore, lets raise a glass to honor and to remember loved ones who are no longer with us./

Este año yo y algunos amigos pasamos la tarde en la tienda de vinos de mi amigo Jordane para celebrar, recordar y disfrutar de una tarde amena en honor a nuestros seres queridos que ya no están con nosotros. Disfrutamos del típico pan de muertos así como también de las calacas de azúcar y chocolate acompañado de una copa de champaña Veuve Clicquot para brindar por nuestros difuntos. My tatarabuela, que murió hace algunos años y con quien estoy en la foto siempre me dijo que; "no hay que tenerle miedo a la muerte, que al contrario hay que aceptar con felicidad la voluntad de dios."

Asi que con esto dicho, levantemos la copa y brindemos por todos aquellos que ya no están con nosotros en la tierra pero que nos cuidan y protegen desde el cielo.
